Ray and Martha Gomillion’s new song “Three Words” does not limit them when they talk about the goodness of God. Martha gave her heart to the Lord as a teenager at her Baptist church during a revival. She was baptized shortly after that. Then, she met a young Pentecostal boy from Golden Grove Church of God down the street. Her family was not sure how this relationship would work. Little did they know that music was the common denominator which would follow this couple all their lives. Married in 1974 in the same Baptist Church Martha was saved in, they ended up serving and making music in Ray’s Church of God. Ray became a little depressed from some trials in life not long after marriage. He prayed there on his living room couch for God to help him and save him. Immediately, his depression and low feelings were gone, and he was a new creation. Ray learned to depend on God from that moment on, but especially when he was diagnosed with cancer in 1985. “I had cancer for five years before they could find out what was wrong with me,” Ray shares. “I went to a specialist who kept telling me nothing was wrong. A lump popped out and the specialist told me it was probably a hernia. He gave me the name of a surgeon for exploratory surgery. I had two surgeries before they told me it was cancer.” As one could imagine, Ray and Martha were shocked. Ray was frustrated that they did not find it sooner, because now there was very little hope, even with treatment, or at least doctors thought there was very little hope. Ray found out differently. Ray shares his story, “God woke me up in the middle of the night and said, ‘if you will do what my Word says, I will heal you.” Ray says he could not wait to get to the church for the service. He asked to be anointed with oil and prayed over. “As they put the oil on me and started to pray, I felt warmth go all over my body from my head to my toes. I was completely healed! I thank God for the doctors He uses to help us, but only God can heal like that!” During high school, Martha had sung in a trio, the Trendsetters, with her sister and a friend. They won a 4-H contest and enjoyed singing in church. Ray’s mother and brother had a group, the Price family, and Ray played the guitar for them. After both those groups disbanded while Ray and Martha were married, it was only natural for the couple to start their own ministry singing Gospel music together. Ray had been keeping a secret. He was a songwriter. Being a little shy, he had kept many songs hidden away in a desk drawer, never letting others hear what he had written. Ray says, “One night, God said, ‘I gave them to you to get out and give the message to others.’ He made it clear He didn’t give them to me to let them set in a desk, but to get His message out. I always want to glorify Him, so I knew it was time to share them.” Martha continues, “Ray was so shy, I had to go outside and pray with him to calm his nerves before we sang. Once he started sharing his own songs, he got better.” Ray shares God gives him his songs in the middle of the night. “When I sit down and try to write a song on my own, they never come, but when God gives them to me in the middle of the night, they flow easily from Him.” The Gomillions have been singing since the late ‘70s. People now not only recognize Ray’s original songs but request them in concert and even ask Martha to share lyrics and recordings with them so they can sing them themselves in their own churches and concerts. “Our most requested song is ‘I’m Gonna See Him.’” Ray says. “I wrote it about our family. My first cousin is our pastor. He started crying sitting in the pew as soon as he heard the message in the song. We recorded it on our second CD. People who have lost loved ones through death are touched by that song. They request it a lot. I am amazed at how God has used that song. I had seen something on Facebook where someone had said, ‘How can you believe in a God you can’t see.’ That made me want to write something to tell them how I can believe in Him. I’ve seen Him work.” Ray shares, “When we first came to record, it was like the devil said, ‘You’re wasting your time going to Nashville to record those songs!’ but seeing one person saved is worth everything! If we just do what God tells us to do, He will do the rest, and someone is saved from hell.” The Gomillions just finished their latest CD with producer Rick Schweinsberg in Nashville. Their daughter Stephanie Burrow is also singing with them again and recorded a solo project
