Preachers in Hell
Troy Ervin comes from Southeastern Ohio, right in the middle of Appalachia. He preached his first sermon at age 18, after spending his whole life in church and at Wellston and Niption Camps, where he now holds services preaching and singing rather than attending as a student. Troy feels that preaching and singing is not just what he does, it is who he is.
Troy says, "When I heard this song, it touched me so deeply. After the song was over, I could still feel the emotions of those same stories, since I had experienced them firsthand. As a preacher, one minute, you are with new parents experiencing the joy of the birth of their new baby. Then next minute, a first responder is asking you to help them pry a mother's hands from the body of her five-year-old who was run over by an ATV, because she can't let go, and they need to get to another accident. I have preached over 4000 funerals during my lengthy ministry. I've had to inform a lot of family members of deaths of their loved ones. I think a lot of pastors will hear the song and be comforted by knowing they are not alone. I also think others, who are not pastors, will hear it and understand the emotional, spiritual, and mental anguish we go through on a weekly basis. Though we are feeling it, we have to hold it together on the outside to help others going through it on a more personal level. I felt every word and story of this song. I wanted to do the song from my own deep personal experience and hope I could interpret it well enough for others to experience it through the song and understand what we go through."
Troy now makes his home in Cincinnati, Ohio, but travels countrywide ministering in music and preaching. He has also written many books.
