About Donavan Wells

Donavan Wells, Rounding 3rd and Headed for Home

What a great baseball analogy in Donavan Wells’ new original song, “Headed for Home.”  Donavan went all out in his baseball uniform in front of a dugout for pictures and a cover, with baseball card downloads to carry on his product table.  His creative juices are always flowing, with many irons in the fire at all times.  Donavan leads the youth group at his church, works a full time job as a delivery person, travels in his singing ministry, and makes BBQ sauce, among many other things he does, especially for God.

Affectionately known as “The Sauce King” by other musicians and in his hometown of Union, South Carolina, Donavan Wells can usually be found singing somewhere with a box of “The Whining Swine” BBQ sauce in his vehicle. From “Plain Jane” made for weaker stomachs to “Carolina Jerk” for braver souls, Donavan says, “They all have their own personalities.”

From the age of 11, after a snake cleared the church at his baptism, Donavan Wells has been singing and sharing his songs and humorous stories.

In high school at age 15, Donavan was inspired to start a Christian band when he saw a button with a cross and music symbol on it.  It carried the verse Acts 1:8, “Be my witness.”  He could feel God’s strong pull on his life as he placed the button on his school jacket.

Though Donavan’s story started in church at a young age, it was not until he was an adult over twenty years later he realized he was not really saved.  He did not have a true relationship with Jesus Christ.

“My wife April looked at me one day and said, ‘We haven’t been to church in a while.’  I was trying to live a double standard.  I went to bars on Saturday night and church on Sunday morning.”

That is when Donavan saw a group called Eternal Vision singing at a restaurant.  “They presented the Gospel like I had never heard it,” shares Donavan.  “I was suddenly miserable. I went to church that Sunday, and asked silently, ‘God, what do you want from me?’” Donavan was amazed when the preacher preached on Acts 1:8, and again heard “Be my witness.”  The message had always been very clear.

“I was trying to hold God’s hand on one side and the devils’ hand on the other,” he says.  “About a week later, I was under conviction so bad I could barely stand it.  I rolled down the window on my truck while driving and screamed, ‘Satan, you can’t have me!  Jesus cleansed me!  Get off of me, in the name of Jesus Christ, my Savior!”

As soon as Donavan rolled up his window, he saw the truck in front of him go crazy, driving sporadically all over the road and then careen over an embankment.

“It was as if I could see the story in the Bible unfold where Jesus cast out demons which went into pigs, and they ran off a cliff.  It was coming to life right before my eyes,” Donavan laughs.

Donavan was working for BMW at the time, and the company gave him a buyout.  As he handed in his uniform, he looked down to see the BMW patch on the shirt he had been wearing for ten years.  In all those years, he had never noticed God was telling him every day through that emblem, ‘Be My Witness.’

Shortly after that, Donavan began singing Southern Gospel music, but says, “My family heritage in Bluegrass music was evident.  When I opened my mouth, it came out country and didn’t really fit into the Southern Gospel style.”

One day, he saw a post on Facebook saying, “If you are a Country style Christian artist, we want to hear your music.”  Donavan felt the Holy Spirit gently say, “This is where you fit in.”  He sent some of his music, and the rest is history.

Donavan’s first release “Goodbye” went to number two on radio and streaming charts.  His second release, “Let It Roll” had radio success as well.  It has been a while since Donavan has released new music, causing excitement for his followers to hear his new song.  Donavan shared that he is a sports fan, and when his University of South Carolina Gamecocks were in the Collegiate National Championship in baseball a few years ago, everyone in his hometown was talking about it.  He thought about them running for first, going to second, and rounding third for home, much like making our way to Heaven.  His new song, “Headed for Home" came from that time in his life.  Be listening and requesting his new song on radio and all streaming platforms.
