The Ball Brothers

By Charles Brady, 2015-10-26

Anyone who thinks a Christian young person is "missing out" on something, has obviously never met the Ball Brothers. These brothers, Andrew, Daniel, Stephen and Josh are young, exciting and love to have a good time doing what God has called them to do. "We like to have fun!", says Daniel. "No one told us siblings couldn't be best friends." The bond these brothers have is an integral part of their unique musical blend. Their youthful energy is apparent to all who meet them and enjoy their exciting live performances. The Ball Brothers showcase a creative confidence and intuitive grasp of harmony that would be rare in artists twice their age.

Central Illinois, where the guys grew up, is more known for flat farm land, than singers. Yet at an early age, The Ball Brothers began practicing the beautiful harmonies that would catapult them into the spotlight. When they began singing with their family, these young men entered into a strong tradition of family harmony groups in gospel music. However, The Ball Brothers bring their own youthful energy to these traditions, creating a style that encompasses all that is great about the family groups of the past with their own unique sensibilities.

With their mix of new and old, The Ball Brothers have great potential to appeal to a broad audience. They will surely attract young people with their exciting performances and older audiences will enjoy gospel harmony at its finest. No matter the age or musical preference, the Ball Brothers have a fresh sound that will appeal to everyone.

In 2006 the Ball Brothers were introduced to thousands of Gospel music fan's at sold out events all across America on the Ernie Haase and Signature Sound Summer Tour. They performed numbers off their debut self-titled CD. In addition to the great success of the summer tour, in 2007 the Ball Brothers made a special guest appearance on EHSS certified gold selling DVD "Get Away Jordan" plus guest appearances on the extremely popular Gaither Homecoming Video Series.

Despite the rapid climb towards success, the Ball Brothers remain focused on their goal of reaching people through music. Andrew states, "When we started off a couple years ago, we had dreams and goals and it's amazing to see how God has helped us meet them. Right now we're focusing on the future . . . " The future for the Ball Brothers includes a National Christmas Tour with special guest Roy Webb and a full Christmas project.

In addition to wowing listeners with their music and expanding their musical horizons, the Ball Brothers take pride in living their lives practicing what they sing. They have a calling from God to see souls touched and people encouraged through their music. With their talent, energy, and the Lord behind them, the Ball Brothers can look forward to even greater recognition for their incredible talents. One can expect that the Ball Brothers will be a fixture in gospel music for many years to come.

The Singing Byrds

By Charles Brady, 2015-10-25

IT ALL BEGAN IN THE LATE FIFTIES, WHEN ANNA {MAMA} BYRD WAS A SONG LEADER IN A LOCAL CHURCH, WOULD TAKE HER TWO TODDLERS, LETTING THEM SING AS SOON AS THEY COULD CARRY A TUNE AND HOLD A MICROPHONE.

IN 1976 MAMA, JEANIE AND ELIZABETH WERE BEING INVITED TO DIFFERENT CHURCHES TO SING. THEY SANG WITH ONLY A FLAT TOP GUITAR, AND MAMA BYRD WOULD SOMETIMES PREACH REVIVALS. SPRING OF 1977 THEY RECORDED THEIR FIRST ALBUM WITH COMBINED MONEY FROM INCOME TAX RETURNS.

RECORDINGS WERE SELLING AND DATES WERE BOOKED WELL IN ADVANCE, MORE MUSIC WAS NEEDED. ELIZABETH LEARNED TO PLAY THE BASS GUITAR AND JEANIE PLAYED TAMBOURINE AND HAS SINCE GRADUATED TO PERCUSSIONS. ROUNDING OUT THE STRING MUSIC IS JEANIE'S HUSBAND, FERRELL BAILEY WHO PLAYS FLAT TOP GUITAR AND ALSO DOES THE DRIVING AND TAKES CARE OF THE SOUND. DUE TO RECENT CHANGES IN THE MINISTRY THEY PERFORM WITH SOUND TRACKS AND A FEW SONGS WITH LIVE MUSIC.

IN 2004 BRIDE OF CHRIST PUBLISHING/BMI WAS ESTABLISHED TO HOUSE SONGS WRITTEN BY THE GROUP MEMBERS, WHICH CAN BE FOUND ON THEIR RECORDINGS. AND ALSO IS HOME TO SEVERAL OTHER ARTIST FOR THEIR PUBLISHING NEEDS. IN JANUARY OF 2011 THEY BOUGHT THEIR OWN RECORD LABEL, RAPTURE READY RECORDS "GET CAUGHT UP". THE LATEST RELEASE, "WINGS" WAS THE FIRST PROJECT ON THE NEW LABEL.

THEY HAVE MOVED INTO A FULL SCALE MINISTRY, INCORPORATING MORE REVIVALS AND LADIES RETREATS WITH THEIR SINGING ENGAGEMENTS AND CONCERTS, DUE TO THE FACT THERE ARE NOW TWO MINISTRIES IN THE GROUP. THE LADIES HOST A LADIES RETREAT EVERY YEAR THE FIRST WEEK~END OF JUNE IN BEAUTIFUL RENFRO VALLEY, KENTUCKY.

You haven't heard the birds sing......until you've heard"

Blackwood Brothers Quartet

By Charles Brady, 2015-10-25
Blackwood Brothers Quartet

The Blackwood Brothers Quartet was formed in 1934 with brothers Roy, Doyle, James and Roy's son, R.W. In the late 50s Roy and Doyle retired from traveling and in 1954 R.W. was killed in a tragic airplane crash. However the quartet with James, as the quartets' leader and spokesman, established a new group of singers who would go on to take Gospel music to new heights as they traveled and sang in all fifty of the United States, every Canadian province as well as cities in Great Britain, Europe, the Middle East, Northern Africa, South Africa, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, South Korea, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

In 2002, James Blackwood went to be with the Lord, but his sons, Jimmy (James Jr.) and Billy continued the 78-year tradition. Recently Jimmy retired after singing for 49 years and his younger brother, Billy now carries on the quartet which has the distinction of being the best-known name in Gospel Music history!

Adam Crabb

By Charles Brady, 2015-10-24
Adam Crabb

Few family names in Christian music evoke immediate thoughts of music like the name Crabb. There have been the Winans that certainly blessed us with amazing talent, the Goodmans with their distinct sound, or maybe the Blackwoods as the "original" quartet that toured, hugged babies, and sold records from the back of a station wagon. However, you would have to look long and hard to find a family in modern history that impacted the Christian music world like the Crabb Family.

This family came on the scene back in the mid 90's with enough energy to plow through most obstacles. They blessed us with smiles, music, love, an amazing work ethic, and they were eager to share their lives with those of us that watched and loved them back. It was an overnight success story by most comparisons, with nearly 20 #1 songs, 11 Dove awards and multiple Grammy nods, in less than ten years. They toured from the Grand Ole Opry, to Africa, and many, many places in between! This large family extended to include many singers, writers, and musicians. By 2002, all of the siblings were married, and the need for more buses and strollers was paramount! The family grew so quickly that it became unreasonable to stay intact as one touring entity. So in 2007, the "Crabb siblings" decided to step into the destiny that God had prepared for them individually!

As with every beautiful story, there is always a last chapter, and an ending. But, this ending spawned multiple exciting beginnings! Stay tuned.....these kids are not finished. They are just getting started!!

Where are they now? Adam Crabb ~ Soloist, Musician Jason Crabb ~ Soloist, Musician Aaron Crabb ~ Worship Leader (Cornerstone Church) San Antonio, Texas Terah Penhollow ~ Vocalist (Bowling Family) Kelly Bowling ~ Vocalist (Bowling Family)

Adam has been referred to as the "face of youth" in the Southern Gospel world, often bridging the gap between grandparents, parents and children. Adam's three years as the leader of the fan favorite "Crabb Revival" gave him the front man experience that is now his comfort zone. His youthful approach to traditional lyrics, and his willingness to minister in word or song makes an evening with Adam truly a one man revival! This young man has traveled well over a million miles, sung on more than a million records (sold) and has seen much of the world as a very young man. When God handed out gifts and attractiveness, he sure didn't leave him out. However, if you met him on the street, his unassuming spirit and kind nature would surprise you as it does most. Adam is what we commonly refer to as a "gentle spirit" or "gentleman." He has never met a person he didn't love, and he has never seen a problem that was bigger than God.

Brian Free and Assurance

By Charles Brady, 2015-10-24
Brian Free and Assurance

Brian Free is undeniably the most recognizable southern gospel tenor of our generation. Since 1982, he has been at the forefront of southern gospel music since first joining Gold City Quartet, then moving on to form his own group.

While Brian and the group have enjoyed tremendous success in their musical careers, their first priority has and always will be their families. Brian, his wife Pam, and his youngest son Bryce currently reside in Winston, Georgia, while his oldest son Ricky and wife Kelly reside in Franklin, Tennessee. Ricky traveled with the group playing drums for nine years, but he is now a full-time studio musician, producer, and writer. Bill Shivers (Lead), along with his wife Michelle and daughters Brittany & Sara-Elizabeth, currently reside in Temple, Georgia. Derrick Selph (Baritone) currently resides in Villa Rica, Georgia with his wife Jennifer and their daughter Lydia. Jeremy Lile (Bass) currently resides in Maryville, Tennessee, along with his wife Nikki and their son Logan.

Southern Gospel music has always been Brian’s first love, and fans have responded to his music by honoring him and the group with awards such as Favorite Male Singer, Favorite Tenor (record of eight times), Favorite Young Artist (twice), Favorite Horizon Group, Favorite Album (4 God So Loved), and most recently, they received a Dove Awards for Southern Gospel Recorded Song, “Long As I Got King Jesus.” Those accolades show the great response to BFA’s music, how God has used them, and how he will continue to use them. While the guys all come from different backgrounds, they all agree on one thing, and that is to use their God-given abilities to take the message of Jesus Christ to everyone they can.

Brian Free and Assurance has achived many honors in southern gospel music, including appearances on Prime Time Country (TNN), Hee Haw (CBS), The "Today Show" (NBC), 27 of the "Gaither Video" series, as well as Brian hosting the hit show "FOUR" on GMC.
